St. Michaels holds on for 3-2 win against Newmarket

The Newmarket Hurricanes tried to dig themselves out of a two-goal hole, but the St. Michaels Buzzers held on for a 3-2 victory.

St. Michaels made the score 3-1 on a goal by Mitch Marner at 11:29 in the third period, and Newmarket got as close as 3-2 when Kyler Nixon scored 18:53 into the third period.

After the loss made the series score 3-2 in the best of seven series, the Hurricanes face elimination next time out.

The Buzzers were sparked by Marner, who registered one goal.

St. Michaels' offense rang up 39 shots on Newmarket's net.

Jake Evans also scored for St. Michaels. More assists for St. Michaels came via Jake Clements, Michael Neville, Troy Josephs, and Patrick McCarron, who contributed one a piece.

The Hurricanes' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on three St. Michaels power plays. Newmarket forced the Buzzers goalie Adrian Ignagni to work between the pipes, taking 45 shots.

The Hurricanes were helped by Ian Farrell, who tallied one goal. Farrell scored 2:03 into the third period to make the score 1-1. Nixon picked up the assist. Newmarket additionally got points from Nixon, who also racked up one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Other players who recorded assists for Newmarket were Travis Dermott and Daniel Leavens, who each chipped in one.

St. Michaels' Ignagni stopped 43 shots out of the 45 that he faced. The Buzzers incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors. Matthew Wintjes made 36 saves for Newmarket on 39 shots. The Hurricanes incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with three minors.
