Fairbanks downs Kenai River in overtime, 6-5 (OT)Soldotna Sports Center Sat, Apr 20, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
The Fairbanks Ice Dogs pulled out a 6-5 (OT) overtime victory over the Kenai River Brown Bears on a clutch goal by Garret Clemment. Fairbanks evened the best of five series at 2-2 and forced a deciding game five. The Ice Dogs nearly gave up a three-score lead. Fairbanks made the score 4-1 on a power play goal by Lawrence Cornellier at 2:46 in the second period. Kenai River got to within 4-3 on a power play goal by Mikhail Bushinski at 2:22 in the third period. Clemment was all over the ice for the Ice Dogs, as he tallied one goal and two assists in the win. Clemment scored 4:09 into overtime to make the score 6-5 Fairbanks. Doug Rose assisted on the tally. Fairbanks forced Brown Bears' netminders to work between the pipes, launching 31 shots and forcing 25 saves. Evan McCarthy made 17 stops and Marcus Zelzer made eight. The Ice Dogs' penalty kill unit could not stop the Brown Bears' power play, which converted on three of five opportunities. Fairbanks also got points from Taylor Munson, who also had one goal and one assist, Max Birkinbine, who also registered one goal and one assist, Cornellier, who also finished with one goal and one assist, Zack Rall, who also grabbed one goal and one assist, and Jayson Angus, who also had one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. In addition, Fairbanks received assists from Nick Hinz, Chandler Madry, and Devin Loe, who contributed one a piece. Fairbanks was unable to stop Kenai River from sending pucks towards the net, and the Brown Bears eventually piled up 36 shots on goal. Kenai River was led by Brad Duwe, who finished with two goals and two assists. Duwe scored the first of his two goals at 13:35 into the second period to make the score 4-2 Fairbanks. Duwe's next tally made the score 4-4 with 15:27 left in the third period. The Brown Bears earned a power play opportunity when Loe was put in the box for tripping. Bushinski picked up the assist. Kenai River additionally got points from Bushinski, who also registered one goal and one assist and Zac Lazzaro, who also tallied two goals and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Kenai River were Ryan Walker, who had one and Jacob Davidson, who had two. Steve Perry made 31 saves for the Ice Dogs on 36 shots. Fairbanks incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Kenai River incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with nine minors.
