Welland beats St. Catharines 4-1 as Mateljan gets hat trick

Matthew Mateljan netted a hat trick to lead the Welland Jr. Canadians over the St. Catharines Falcons, 4-1.

Mateljan's first goal came 13:39 into the first period. He then added goals at 17:17 into the first and at 6:08 into the second.

With the win, Welland evened the series at 2-2 in the best of seven showdown.

St. Catharines was stymied by the Jr. Canadians netminder Chris McDougall, who stopped 49 shots during the victory. The solid play of McDougall will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 2.52.

Welland made Falcons' netminders to work between the pipes, racking up 38 shots and forcing 34 saves. Jonathon D Ilario made nine stops and Stormer Santana made 25.

Welland also got a goal from Jason Lacroix as well. More assists for Welland came via Chris Langdon, who had two and Adam Mataya, Riley Brooks, CJ Stellato, Chris Brown, Gabe Ruggi, and Ryan Migliaccio, who each chipped in one.

The Falcons excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in seven chances. St. Catharines' offense rang up 50 shots on the Jr. Canadians' net.

Welland incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors. The Falcons incurred 22 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
