St. Catharines outlasts Welland, 5-3

The game between the St. Catharines Falcons and the Welland Jr. Canadians was tight through all 60 minutes, but in the end St. Catharines emerged with a 5-3 win.

No lead was more than two goals during the contest, and the winning goal was scored by Jimmy Sheehan at 10:59 of the third period.

The win gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead in the best of seven series.

St. Catharines was paced by Sheehan, who registered one goal.

Welland was unable to stop the Falcons from sending pucks towards the net, and St. Catharines eventually piled up 38 shots on goal. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals.

St. Catharines additionally got points from Yanni Rallis, who also tallied one goal and one assist, Spencer DeWolfe, who also had one goal and one assist, and Mitch Bennett, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Brad Col also scored for St. Catharines. More assists for St. Catharines came via Luke Karaim, who had three and Greg Jambrosich, Tyler Jackson, Aaron Taylor, and Mitch Bursey, who each chipped in one.

The Jr. Canadians were helped by Josh Gervais, who registered one goal. Gervais scored 7:01 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Welland. Spencer Giles assisted on the tally. Welland also got a goal from Adam Mataya as well. In addition, Welland received assists from Matt Gillard and Matthew Mateljan, who contributed one a piece.

The Falcons took out Stormer Santana after he had made four saves and installed Jonathon D Ilario in goal, where he finished with 20 saves and the win. St. Catharines incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with two minors. Chris McDougall made 33 saves for Welland on 38 shots. The Jr. Canadians incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors.
