GAME RECAP

Cambridge stifles Stratford's comeback, gains 5-3 victory

Allman Arena    Mon, Apr 01, 2013

The Stratford Cullitons almost clawed their way back from a three-goal deficit, but the Cambridge Winter Hawks managed to pull out a 5-3 win in the end.

Cambridge led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when the Winter Hawks' Kyle Locke's scored at 7:08 in the second period to put Cambridge up 4-1.

After the loss made the series score 3-1 in the best of seven series, Stratford faces elimination next time out.

Todd Bannermon was all over the ice for the Winter Hawks, as he tallied two goals and one assist in the win. Bannermon scored the first of his two goals short handed at 12:00 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Cambridge. A cross checking call on Locke put Cambridge on the penalty kill. Bannermon's next tally short handed made the score 3-1 Cambridge with 2:54 left in the first period. A cross checking penalty on Liam Maaskant had put the Winter Hawks on the power play. Andrew Coupland assisted on the tally.

The Cullitons' power play was ineffective against Cambridge's penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

The Winter Hawks excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in eight chances.

Cody Gratton also scored for Cambridge. More assists for Cambridge came via Tyler Snyder and Brennon Pearce, who contributed one a piece.

Cambridge was unable to stop Stratford from sending pucks towards the net, and the Cullitons eventually piled up 44 shots on goal.

Stratford was helped by Jake Ryan, who grabbed one goal. Ryan scored 4:15 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Cambridge. Andrew Barton provided the assist. Stratford also got a goal from Jordan Currie as well. In addition, Stratford received assists from Brett Heaman, Ryker Killins, and Mike Pleon, who each chipped in one.
