Stratford pulls away in second, rolls over Cambridge, 7-1

The Stratford Cullitons scored five goals in the second period to pull away from the Cambridge Winter Hawks and clinch a 7-1 win.

With the win, Stratford evened the series at 1-1 in the best of seven showdown.

Jonathan Langford had five goals to lead the Cullitons to victory. Langford notched his first tally 4:11 into the second period. He then added goals at 4:36 into the second, at 6:46 into the second, at 14:30 into the second, and at 13:31 into the third.

Stratford was led by goalie Nick Caldwell, who finished with 31 saves while allowing one goal. The solid play of Caldwell will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 2.45.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 15:19 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Cullitons forced Cambridge's goalies to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, ripping 38 shots and forcing 31 saves. Lucas Machalski made 21 stops and Jordan Lee made 10.

Jake Pleon also scored for Stratford. Other players who recorded assists for Stratford were Dylan Wettlaufer, who had two and Shane O Brien, Mitch Brooks, Jordan Currie, Trevor Sauder, and Jared Culliton, who each chipped in one.

The Winter Hawks put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Stratford to score on any of its four power plays. Cambridge forced the Cullitons goalie Caldwell to work between the pipes, taking 32 shots.

Stratford ended with 59 minutes in penalty time with seven minors and three majors. For the Cullitons, Ryan Watson, Wettlaufer, and Jeff McArdle were ejected from the contest. The Winter Hawks totaled 47 minutes in penalty time with six minors and three majors and went 1-for-9 on the power play. Team's Brandon Plourde, Maxime Lamontagne, and Brennon Pearce were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
