Smith nets hat trick, leads Port Colborne to 6-0 win over Welland

A hat trick by Trevor Smith was the highlight in Pirates' 6-0 win against the Welland Jr. Canadians.

Smith got on the scoresheet 3:58 into the first period. He then added goals at 7:20 into the first and at 12:34 into the first.

The Port Colborne Pirates evened the best of seven series at 3-3 and forced a deciding game seven.

Port Colborne scored early and often, and held a 4-0 advantage after the first 20 minutes of play.

The Pirates were boosted by Real Cormier, who turned in a shutout with 27 saves. Cormier certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 2.5 entering the contest.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 4:17 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Port Colborne made Welland's goalies to work without much rest, ripping 45 shots and forcing 39 saves. Matt Coulombe made eight stops and Chris McDougall made 31. The Pirates' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on seven Welland power plays.

Port Colborne also got points from Nick Berst, who also tallied two goals and one assist. Jordan Warren also scored for Port Colborne. Other players who recorded assists for Port Colborne were Michael Sharp and Charlie Izaguirre, who contributed one a piece and DYLAN BURDICK, Nathan Judd Warren, and Dima Lavrenov, who each chipped in two.

Port Colborne totaled 55 minutes in penalty time with 10 minors and one major and went 2-for-11 on the power play. For the Pirates, Jordan Bolibruck was ejected from the game. The Jr. Canadians ended with 85 minutes in penalty time with 10 minors and one major. For Welland, Lapine Rob and Chris Langdon were ejected from the contest.
