Cambridge beats Kitchener 4-3 after comeback scare

The Cambridge Winter Hawks survived a determined comeback attempt by the Kitchener Dutchmen on the way to a 4-3 win.

A goal by Cody Gratton put Cambridge up 4-2 in the third period, but Kitchener pulled to within one on Keli Grant's tally 5:59 into the third period.

With the win, the Winter Hawks evened the series at 2-2 in the best of seven showdown.

Cambridge was led by Gratton, who registered one goal. Gratton scored 5:29 into the third period to make the score Cambridge. Maxime Lamontagne picked up the assist.

The Winter Hawks forced the Dutchmen goalie Marc Williams to work between the pipes, taking 33 shots. Cambridge's penalty kill unit could not stop Kitchener's power play, which converted on two of three opportunities.

Cambridge also got a goal from Christian Barnard as well. More assists for Cambridge came via Lucas Machalski, Tyler Snyder, Andrew Coupland, Chris Taylor, and Todd Bannermon, who each chipped in one.

The Dutchmen excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances.

Kitchener was helped by Clayton Greer, who grabbed one goal. Greer scored on the power play 8:26 into the first period to make the score 1-1. The Dutchmen earned a power play opportunity when Brennon Pearce was put in the box for checking from behind. Brett Clampitt provided the assist. Kitchener additionally got points from Clampitt, who also had one goal and one assist and Grant, who also finished with one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Other players who recorded assists for Kitchener were Jordan Delaurier, who had two and Tyler Hoffman and Keegan Alvestad, who contributed one a piece.

Machalski recorded 21 saves for the Winter Hawks. Cambridge ended with 13 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major. For the Winter Hawks, Gratton and Pearce were ejected from the contest. Williams rejected 29 shots on goal for Kitchener. The Dutchmen ended with 19 minutes in penalty time with two minors and one major. For Kitchener, Greer was ejected from the game.
