Helena Bighorns takes care of Missoula Maulers early, wins 8-0

A four-goal first period deficit cost the Missoula Maulers Maulers, which could not recover and fell to Helena Bighorns, 8-0.

The win by Helena Bighorns clinched the best of five series at 3-0.

Helena Bighorns was boosted by Jett Salinas, who turned in a shutout with 32 saves.

Helena Bighorns got the win with help from a great game by Logan Hawgood, who had two goals and two assists. Hawgood scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 10:46 into the first period to make the score 3-0 Helena Bighorns. Helena Bighorns had gained a power play chance when Dylan Chase was whistled for checking from behind. Corbin Belling provided the assist. Hawgood's next tally on the power play made the score 4-0 Helena Bighorns with 7:25 left in the first period. Helena Bighorns had taken the advantage when Missoula Maulers' Viktor Steenson got sent off for boarding. Christian Axelson picked up the assist.

Helena Bighorns excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in seven chances. The Maulers were unable to stop Helena Bighorns from sending pucks towards the net, and Helena Bighorns eventually piled up 89 shots on goal. Helena Bighorns' defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in three goals.

Helena Bighorns additionally got points from Dylan Webster, who also tallied one goal and one assist, Axelson, who also finished with one goal and three assists, and Cody Blom, who also registered one goal and one assist. Devin Smith also scored for Helena Bighorns. In addition, Helena Bighorns received assists from Brandon Rumble, who had two and Theo Campe, Damon Hanson, Kyle Baker, and Ben Henry, who contributed one a piece.

Missoula Maulers forced Helena Bighorns goalie Salinas to work between the pipes, taking 32 shots. Penalties took their toll on the Maulers, as their penalty kill unit let in four power play goals.

Helena Bighorns incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. Cody Janzen recorded 81 saves for Missoula Maulers. The Maulers incurred 26 minutes in penalty time with eight minors.
