Murray's big game bests Norwich in 7-4 New Hamburg win

The New Hamburg Firebirds' Sam Murray had a big offensive game, scoring two goals and contributing two assists in his team's 7-4 win over the Norwich Merchants.

Murray scored at 7:15 into the first period to make the score 2-0 New Hamburg and again while on the power play 6:41 into the second to make the score 4-1 New Hamburg.

The win by New Hamburg clinched the best of seven series at 4-2.

Norwich was doomed by its poor performance on special teams, as the Firebirds were able to score four times while on the power play.

New Hamburg forced Merchants' goalies to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, firing 47 shots and forcing 40 saves. Zac Easveld made 37 stops and Matt McGonigle made three. The Firebirds' penalty kill was ineffective, and let in two goals to the Merchants' power play unit.

New Hamburg also got points from Sean Kienapple, who also tallied one goal and two assists and Trevor Sweetland, who also registered one goal and one assist. New Hamburg also got a goal from Mike DAloisio as well. More assists for New Hamburg came via Jay DAguilar and Andrew Boer, who each chipped in one and Kyle McDonald, Eric Fischer, and Brock Yantzi, who contributed two a piece.

New Hamburg was unable to stop Norwich from sending pucks towards the net, and the Merchants eventually piled up 32 shots on goal.

Norwich was led by Drake Morrell, who had two goals and one assist. Morrell scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 19:46 into the second period to make the score 5-2 New Hamburg. The Merchants had gotten the advantage when the Firebirds' Connor Voigt was sent off for tripping. Gus Ford picked up the assist. Morrell's next tally on the power play made the score 5-3 New Hamburg with 19:30 left in the third period. Zach Core provided the assist. Norwich additionally got points from Ford, who also grabbed one goal and two assists and Core, who also finished with one goal and one assist. In addition, Norwich received assists from Todd Kemp, Tom Brady, and Brandon Zimmermann, who each chipped in one.

Eric Peicheff made 28 saves for New Hamburg on 32 shots. The Firebirds ended with 17 minutes in penalty time with six minors and one major. New Hamburg ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Jay Fried was ejected from the game. Norwich ended with 25 minutes in penalty time with 10 minors and one major. For the Merchants, Dalton Riley was ejected from the game.
