Stratford hangs on, beats Waterloo 3-1Allman Arena Mon, Mar 04, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
Shane O Brien gave the Stratford Cullitons the lead in the first period, and the Waterloo Siskins was never able to catch up in a close game that ended 3-1. A goal 4:49 into the the first period by O Brien proved to be the game winner, and powered Stratford to the victory Josh Miller provided the assist.The win by the Cullitons broke a deadlock and gave Stratford a 2-1 advantage in the best of seven series. Waterloo was stymied by the Cullitons netminder Nick Caldwell, who stopped 44 shots during the victory. Caldwell certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 2.35 entering the contest. Stratford's penalty kill excelled, as the Cullitons gave up zero goals despite allowing eight power plays. Stratford stifled the Siskins' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Waterloo was unable to stop the Cullitons from sending pucks towards the net, and Stratford eventually piled up 33 shots on goal. The Cullitons were helped by Ryker Killins, who racked up one goal. Killins scored 19:01 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Stratford. Dylan Wettlaufer picked up the assist. Stratford also got a goal from Jared Culliton as well. More assists for Stratford came via Liam Maaskant, Brett Heaman, Jordan Currie, and Trevor MacDonald, who contributed one a piece. The Siskins put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Stratford to score on any of its eight power plays. Waterloo's offense rang up 45 shots on the Cullitons' net. The Siskins were led by James Soper, who scored the team's only goal. Soper scored 5:14 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Stratford. Brandon Jones assisted on the tally. Stratford incurred 30 minutes in penalty time with 10 minors. Waterloo's Darren Huck stopped 30 shots out of the 33 that he faced. The Siskins incurred 22 minutes in penalty time with 11 minors.
