Huge game by Mac Avoy boosts Thorold over Niagara Falls, 8-5

Behind a great game by Mackenzie Mac Avoy, who had one goal and three assists, the Thorold Blackhawks defeated the Niagara Falls Canucks, 8-5.

Mac Avoy scored on the power play 12:34 into the second period to make the score 6-2 Thorold. Thorold had gotten the advantage when Niagara Falls' Mitch McIntosh was sent off for hooking. Dan Chudobiak assisted on the tally. Mac Avoy dished an assist on Tanner Hildbrant's goal that made the score 1-0 Thorold at 3:06 into the first period. He then added assists on Adrian Copeland's goal at 1:17 into the second and on Vince Dunn's goal at 14:31 into the second.

With the win, the Blackhawks evened the series at 1-1 in the best of seven showdown.

Thorold pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 24 penalty minutes.

The Blackhawks forced the Canucks goalie Hunter Johnson to work between the pipes, taking 31 shots. Thorold's defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals.

Thorold also got points from Hildbrant, who also registered one goal and one assist, Copeland, who also had one goal and one assist, and Dunn, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Thorold included Joel Forestell, who had two and Kevin Lavoie and Myles Falasca, who each put in one. More assists for Thorold came via Brian Brosnan, Matt Pizzo, Matthew Hoszko, Kevin Millejours, RJ Sciarrone, and Mark Arnone, who contributed one a piece.

Niagara Falls' offense rang up 43 shots on the Blackhawks' net. The Canucks were ineffective while on the power play, as they were held to one goal off of nine man advantages.

Niagara Falls was led by Darren Young, who racked up one goal and two assists. Young scored 15:28 into the second period to make the score 7-3 Thorold. Marcus Michalski picked up the assist. Niagara Falls additionally got points from Michael Christou, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Johnny Curran also scored for Niagara Falls. Other players who recorded assists for Niagara Falls were Garrett Gallardi, who had one and Cam Stewart, who had three.

Thorold's Vinny Merante stopped 38 shots out of the 43 that he faced. The Blackhawks registered two goals on five power play opportunities. Johnson rejected 23 shots on goal for the Canucks. Niagara Falls incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
