Elmira blows out Cambridge, 5-1

The Elmira Sugar Kings had a three-goal lead after two periods and cruised the rest of the way en route to a 5-1 win over the Cambridge Winter Hawks.

After the loss made the series score 2-3 in the best of seven series, Cambridge faces elimination next time out.

Jake Weidner had one goal and two assists to lead Elmira. Weidner scored 10:11 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Elmira. Brady Campbell provided the assist.

The Sugar Kings excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances. The Winter Hawks were unable to stop Elmira from sending pucks towards the net, and the Sugar Kings eventually piled up 42 shots on goal.

Elmira additionally got points from Campbell, who also racked up two goals and one assist. Elmira also got a goal from Cass Frey as well. In addition, Elmira received assists from Brodie Whitehead and Matt Harding, who contributed one a piece.

Cambridge stifled Elmira's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Winter Hawks forced the Sugar Kings goalie Hayden Neuman to work between the pipes, taking 35 shots.

Cambridge was led by Cody Gratton, who scored the team's only goal. Gratton scored 43 seconds into the second period to make the score 3-1 Elmira. Brandon Plourde picked up the assist.

Neuman rejected 34 shots on goal for Elmira. The Sugar Kings incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Lucas Machalski recorded 37 saves for the Winter Hawks. Cambridge incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
