GAME RECAP

Cambridge outlasts Elmira, 4-2

Dan Snyder Memorial    Sun, Mar 03, 2013

In a game where neither team could get a cushion, the Cambridge Winter Hawks escaped with a 4-2 victory over the Elmira Sugar Kings.

Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Cody Gratton's goal in the third period proved to be the difference maker.

After the loss made the series score 3-1 in the best of seven series, Elmira faces elimination next time out.

Gratton was all over the ice for Cambridge, as he grabbed two goals in the win.

The Winter Hawks stifled the Sugar Kings' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Elmira was unable to stop Cambridge from sending pucks towards the net, and the Winter Hawks eventually piled up 37 shots on goal.

Cambridge also got a goal from Mitch Facey as well. Other players who recorded assists for Cambridge were Trevor Hache, who had two and Christian Barnard, Mitch Klie, Aaron Duggan, and Maxime Lamontagne, who contributed one a piece.

The Sugar Kings' offense rang up 54 shots on Cambridge's net.

Elmira was helped by Jake Weidner, who registered two goals. Weidner scored the first of his two goals at 14:22 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Elmira. Brandon Stewart picked up the assist. Weidner's next tally made the score 2-2 with 2:34 left in the second period. Brady Campbell assisted on the tally.

Lucas Machalski rejected 52 shots on goal for the Winter Hawks. Cambridge incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Hayden Neuman recorded 33 saves for the Sugar Kings. Elmira incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. The Sugar Kings ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Matt Harding was ejected from the game.
