Cambridge squeaks by Elmira, 4-2

The Cambridge Winter Hawks gutted out a close 4-2 win against the Elmira Sugar Kings.

Cambridge gained the winning advantage on a goal by Cody Gratton 5:53 into the third period and hung on until final buzzer.

With the win, the Winter Hawks evened the series at 1-1 in the best of seven showdown.

Cambridge got the win thanks to a great game by Gratton, who had one goal and two assists.

Cambridge additionally got points from Cameron Pentsa, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Cambridge also got a goal from Kyle Locke as well. Other players who recorded assists for Cambridge were Maxime Lamontagne, who had two and Brandon Plourde and Todd Bannermon, who contributed one a piece.

Elmira stifled the Winter Hawks' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Sugar Kings forced Cambridge goalie Lucas Machalski to work between the pipes, taking 44 shots.

Elmira was helped by Zac Coulter, who grabbed one goal. Coulter scored on the power play 9:58 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Elmira. The Sugar Kings earned a power play opportunity when Tyler Snyder was put in the box for head contact. Pat McKelvie(APJ) picked up the assist. Brady Campbell also scored for Elmira. In addition, Elmira received assists from Cash Seraphim, who had one.

Machalski rejected 42 shots on goal for the Winter Hawks. Cambridge totaled 41 minutes in penalty time with eight minors and one major and went 0-for-7 on the power play. For the Winter Hawks, Trevor Hache was ejected from the game. Hayden Neuman made 26 saves for Elmira on 30 shots. The Sugar Kings totaled 27 minutes in penalty time with six minors and one major and went 2-for-10 on the power play. Elmira ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Brandon Stewart was ejected from the game.
