Hermantown uses fast start to beat Rogers, 9-0

A four-goal first period deficit cost the Rogers Royals, which could not recover and fell to the Hermantown Hawks, 9-0.

The win gave Hermantown a 1-0 lead in the best of one series.

Neal Pionk was all over the ice for the Hawks, as he tallied two goals and one assist in the win. Pionk scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 7:13 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Hermantown. A slashing penalty on Nate Weber had put Hermantown on the power play. Bo Gronseth provided the assist. Pionk's next tally on the power play made the score 8-0 Hermantown with 14:15 left in the third period. Jake Zeleznikar assisted on the tally.

Rogers' four penalties came back to haunt it, as the Royals let up four goals while on the penalty kill.

The Hawks stifled Rogers' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Royals were unable to stop Hermantown from sending pucks towards the net, and the Hawks eventually piled up 48 shots on goal. The defensemen of Hermantown were also effective in Rogers' zone, and came away with three goals.

Hermantown additionally got points from Travis Koepke, who also racked up one goal and two assists. Hermantown also had goals scored by Chris Benson, who had three and Nate Pionk, Ryan Kero, and Luke Jacques, who each put in one. More assists for Hermantown came via Christian Wasbotten, Kori Ochs, Zach Kramer, Lane LeGarde, and Grant Sega, who contributed one a piece.

Adam Smith made 15 saves for the Hawks on 15 shots. Hermantown incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors. Blake Ternus rejected 39 shots on goal for the Royals. Rogers incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
