Duluth East beats Grand Rapids 4-3 after comeback scareAmsoil Arena Thu, Feb 28, 2013
The Duluth East Greyhounds survived a determined comeback attempt by the Grand Rapids Thunderhawks on the way to a 4-3 win. Duluth East took a 4-2 lead during the third period, only to have Grand Rapids storm back on a Reid Holum goal 15:50 into the third period to pull to one goal down.
The win gave the Greyhounds the right to represent Section 7AA in the 2013 MSHSL Class AA state tourney at the Xcel Energy Center. In a losing effort, the Thunderhawks were sparked by Holum, who tallied two goals and one assist. Holum scored the first of his two goals at 5:55 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Duluth East. Jonah Bischoff assisted on the tally. Holum's next tally made the score 4-3 Duluth East with 4:10 left in the third period. Jake Bischoff picked up the assist. Duluth East stifled Grand Rapids' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Greyhounds' offense rang up 40 shots on the Thunderhawks' net. Duluth East was helped by Alex Toscano, who racked up one goal and one assist. Toscano scored 12:27 into the third period to make the score Duluth East. Phil Beaulieu assisted on the tally. Duluth East also got points from Beaulieu, who also had one goal and one assist and Jack Forbort, who also registered one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Duluth East also got a goal from Jack Kolar as well. More assists for Duluth East came via Brian Bunten and Alex Trapp, who each chipped in one. Grand Rapids excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances. Grand Rapids additionally got points from Bischoff, who also tallied one goal and one assist. In addition, Grand Rapids received assists from Avery Peterson and Curtiss Simonson, who contributed one a piece. Dylan Parker made 23 saves for the Greyhounds on 26 shots. Duluth East incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Hunter Shepard rejected 36 shots on goal for the Thunderhawks. Grand Rapids totaled nine minutes in penalty time with two minors and one major and went 0-for-4 on the power play.
