Stayner survives Schomberg comeback, wins 3-2

The Schomberg Cougars tried their best to erase a two-goal deficit, but the Stayner Siskins would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 3-2.

Stayner made the score 3-1 on a goal by Mike Mullay at 14:52 in the third period, and Schomberg got as close as 3-2 when Eric Samtleben scored 18:56 into the third period.

The win by the Siskins clinched the best of seven series at 4-0.

James Mense-Dietrich was all over the ice for Stayner, as he tallied two goals and one assist in the win. Mense-Dietrich scored the first of his two goals at 1:53 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Stayner. Mullay assisted on the tally. Mense-Dietrich's next tally made the score 2-1 Stayner with 13:32 left in the second period. Mullay picked up the assist.

The Siskins stifled the Cougars' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man.

Stayner also got points from Mullay, who also grabbed one goal and two assists. More assists for Stayner came via Jason Seeley, who had one and Justin Reid, who had two.

Schomberg forced Stayner goalie Taylor Trace to work between the pipes, taking 39 shots.

The Cougars were led by Colton Wood, who racked up one goal and one assist. Wood scored 18:06 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Declan Lampe assisted on the tally. In addition, Schomberg received assists from Christian Muenz and Tyler Simmons, who contributed one a piece.

The Siskins' Trace stopped 37 shots out of the 39 that he faced. Stayner incurred 22 minutes in penalty time with 11 minors and had no power play opportunities. Taylor Ewart made 19 saves for Schomberg on 22 shots. The Cougars incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors.
