Mahtomedi falls apart in second, loses to Grand Rapids, 5-0

The Grand Rapids Thunderhawks scored three goals in the second period to pull away from the Mahtomedi Zephyers and clinch a 5-0 win.

Avery Peterson had two goals and one assist to lead Grand Rapids. Peterson scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 13:08 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Grand Rapids. The Thunderhawks had taken the advantage when Mahtomedi's Jack Becker got sent off for hooking. Reid Holum provided the assist. Peterson's next tally on the power play made the score 3-0 Grand Rapids with 13:28 left in the second period. Holum picked up the assist.

Grand Rapids' offense was clicking better than usual and put 32 shots on goal during the game, better than the 6.0 shots per game it averages.

Grand Rapids additionally got points from Cody Mann, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Grand Rapids also got a goal from Jonah Bischoff as well. Other players who recorded assists for Grand Rapids were Michael LaRoque, who had one.

The Zephyers could not produce up to they normal offensive output. Mahtomedi puts an average of 3.4 pucks into the net per game. The Zephyers' normally stingy defense allowed more goals than usual. Mahtomedi is averaging 2.5 goals against for the season.

Hunter Shepard rejected 20 shots on goal for the Thunderhawks. Grand Rapids incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors. Colin Denis recorded 27 saves for the Zephyers. Mahtomedi incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
