Breckenridge/Wahpeton beats Northern Lakes 2-1 after comeback scare

The Breckenridge/Wahpeton Blades survived a determined comeback attempt by the Northern Lakes Lightning on the way to a 2-1 win.

A goal by Joseph Smith put Breckenridge/Wahpeton up 2-0 in the second period, but Northern Lakes pulled to within one on Nick Blanchette's tally 6:02 into the third period.

The Lightning's power play was ineffective against the Blades' penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

Breckenridge/Wahpeton put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Northern Lakes to score on any of its eight power plays. The Blades' penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as Breckenridge/Wahpeton finished with 17 penalty minutes.

Zach Reiff also scored for Breckenridge/Wahpeton. More assists for Breckenridge/Wahpeton came via Austin Hagstrom, Brandon Wixo, and Clay Bassingthwaithe, who each chipped in one.

The Lightning could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 20 minutes in penalties during the game.

Other players who recorded assists for Northern Lakes were Ben Moe, who had one.

Michael Withuski rejected 23 shots on goal for the Blades. Breckenridge/Wahpeton registered one goal on eight power play opportunities. Northern Lakes' Mitch Stangel stopped 18 shots out of the 20 that he faced.
