Grand Rapids survives Moorhead comeback, wins 5-3

The Grand Rapids Thunderhawks survived a determined comeback attempt by the Moorhead Spuds on the way to a 5-3 win.

Grand Rapids took a 5-2 lead during the third period, only to have Moorhead storm back on a Thomas Carey goal 16:31 into the third period to pull to two goals down.

The Thunderhawks got the win thanks to a great game by Jake Bischoff, who had two goals and one assist. Bischoff scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 6:41 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Grand Rapids earned a power play opportunity when Tucker Masseth was put in the box for boarding. Jonah Bischoff provided the assist. Bischoff's next tally on the power play made the score Grand Rapids with 11:02 left in the third period. An interference penalty on Eric Barker had put the Thunderhawks on the power play. Avery Peterson assisted on the tally.

Grand Rapids put 29 shots on net during the contest, more than the 4.2 it averages per game. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with three goals.

Grand Rapids additionally got points from Bischoff, who also registered one goal and one assist. Grand Rapids also got a goal from Shaffer Holum as well. More assists for Grand Rapids came via David Horsmann, Cody Mann, and Curtiss Simonson, who each chipped in one.

The 26 shots that the Spuds put on net surpassed Moorhead's average of 1.7 shot per game this season.

Austin Skjefte also scored for Moorhead. Other players who recorded assists for Moorhead were Tony Uglem and John OConnor, who contributed one a piece.

The Thunderhawks' Hunter Shepard stopped 23 shots out of the 26 that he faced. Grand Rapids incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors. Jacob Dittmer rejected 24 shots on goal for the Spuds. Moorhead totaled 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major and went 0-for-2 on the power play.
