Grand Rapids downs Elk River in overtime, 3-2 (OT)Braemar Arena Sat, Dec 22, 2012 The Grand Rapids Thunderhawks' Avery Peterson scored 3:48 into overtime to beat the Elk River Elks, 3-2 (OT). Grand Rapids overcame a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Thunderhawks trailed 2-0 after a power play goal by Elk River's Tim Sandford at 13:50 in the first period. Grand Rapids tied things up at 2-2 on a goal by Reid Holum at 15:29 in the second period. Peterson had two goals to lead the Thunderhawks to victory. Grand Rapids' offense was clicking better than usual and put 24 shots on goal during the game, better than the 8.7 shots per game it averages. The defense for the Thunderhawks played an important role offensively, racking up 10 shots on goal. Grand Rapids additionally got points from Holum, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. More assists for Grand Rapids came via Shaffer Holum, Connor LaRoque, and Peter Sahlstrom, who each chipped in one. The Elks forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up seven minors and one major for 29 minutes in penalty time.
