Eveleth-Gilbert holds on for 4-3 win against Lake of the Woods/IndusEveleth Hippodrome Sat, Dec 08, 2012 The Lake of the Woods/Indus Bears tried their best to erase a three-goal deficit, but the Eveleth-Gilbert Golden Bears would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 4-3. Eveleth-Gilbert took a 3-0 lead during the first period, only to have Lake of the Woods/Indus storm back on a Kyle Olson goal 21 seconds into the third period to pull to one goal down. The Bears' power play was ineffective against the Golden Bears' penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded. Eveleth-Gilbert forced Lake of the Woods/Indus goalie Olson to work between the pipes, taking 36 shots. The Golden Bears' penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as Eveleth-Gilbert finished with 14 penalty minutes. The Golden Bears were helped by Brett Kivela, who had one goal. Kivela scored short handed 6:10 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Eveleth-Gilbert. A tripping call on Cole Jackson put Eveleth-Gilbert on the penalty kill. Mitchell Huffman provided the assist. Eveleth-Gilbert also got points from Huffman, who also tallied one goal and one assist and Nick Moe, who also finished with one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Zach Skelton also scored for Eveleth-Gilbert. The Bears managed to stay out of the box better than usual, registering one minor for two minutes in penalty time. Lake of the Woods/Indus wound up below its season average of 11.0 penalty minutes per game. The Bears were led by Victor Dahl, who racked up one goal and two assists. Dahl scored on the power play 31 seconds into the second period to make the score 3-1 Eveleth-Gilbert. Olson picked up the assist. Lake of the Woods/Indus additionally got points from Olson, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Lake of the Woods/Indus also got a goal from Jaden Gustafson as well. In addition, Lake of the Woods/Indus received assists from Kenton Peters and Carter Chorney, who each chipped in one. Derek Hirsch rejected 16 shots on goal for the Golden Bears. Eveleth-Gilbert registered zero goals on one power play opportunities. Lake of the Woods/Indus' Olson stopped 32 shots out of the 36 that he faced.
