Peterson's big game bests Warroad in 5-2 Grand Rapids winIRA Civic Center Sat, Dec 08, 2012 The Grand Rapids Thunderhawks' Avery Peterson had a big offensive game, scoring one goal and contributing three assists in his team's 5-2 win over the Warroad Warriors. Peterson beat Justin King with a shot 6:42 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Grand Rapids. David Horsmann assisted on the tally. Peterson dished an assist on Cody Mann's goal that made the score 2-1 Warroad at 14:51 into the first period. He then added assists on Shaffer Holum's goal at 32 seconds into the second and on Mann's goal at 4:11 into the third.Grand Rapids excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances. The Thunderhawks forced Warroad goalie King to work between the pipes, taking 42 shots. John Crippa also scored for Grand Rapids. Other players who recorded assists for Grand Rapids were Michael LaRoque, who had one and Reid Holum, who had three. The Warriors stifled Grand Rapids' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Warroad's offense operated below it season average. The Warriors put an average of 4.8 pucks into the net per game. Warroad's defense was uncharacteristically lax during the game. The Warriors give up 1.8 goal per game. Warroad was helped by Ben Smieja, who tallied one goal. Smieja scored 12:23 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Warroad. Baihly Hontvet picked up the assist. Warroad also got points from Kobe Roth, who also had one goal and one assist. In addition, Warroad received assists from Jared Bethune, who had one. Hunter Shepard recorded 20 saves for the Thunderhawks. Grand Rapids incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors. The Warriors' King stopped 37 shots out of the 42 that he faced. Warroad ended with 29 minutes in penalty time with two minors and one major. For the Warriors, Luke Jaycox and Kyle Sylvester were ejected from the contest.
