Wadena-Deer Creek outlasts Northern Lakes, 4-2

In a game where neither team could get a cushion, the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines escaped with a 4-2 victory over the Northern Lakes Lightning.

Wadena-Deer Creek gained the winning advantage on a goal by Mitchell Swanson 16:08 into the second period and hung on until final buzzer.

The Wolverines were sparked by Swanson, who registered one goal and one assist.

Wadena-Deer Creek put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Northern Lakes to score on any of its three power plays.

Wadena-Deer Creek also got points from Dylan Phillips, who also racked up one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Christian Berg also scored for Wadena-Deer Creek. Other players who recorded assists for Wadena-Deer Creek were Mike Paavola, who had one and Michael Behl, who had two.

The Lightning's offense rang up 34 shots on the Wolverines' net. Northern Lakes struggled on the penalty kill, allowing Wadena-Deer Creek to score two power play goals on three chances.

The Lightning were helped by Kegan Couture, who tallied one goal. Couture scored 2:20 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Northern Lakes. Ben Moe picked up the assist. Northern Lakes also got a goal from Gaven Bickford as well. In addition, Northern Lakes received assists from Aspen Florey and Alex Galligan, who contributed one a piece.

Wesley Janson recorded 32 saves for the Wolverines. Wadena-Deer Creek incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Mitch Stangel rejected 19 shots on goal for Northern Lakes. The Lightning ended with 31 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major.
