Huge game by Simonson boosts Grand Rapids over Bemidji, 5-0

Curtiss Simonson had one goal and two assists to lead the Grand Rapids Thunderhawks to a 5-0 victory over the Bemidji Lumberjacks.

Simonson scored on the power play 8:00 into the second period to make the score 1-0 Grand Rapids. Grand Rapids had gotten the advantage when Bemidji's Matt Serratore was sent off for hooking. Avery Peterson picked up the assist. Simonson dished an assist on Cody Mann's goal that made the score 2-0 Grand Rapids at 16:03 into the second period. He added another helper on Mann's goal that made the score 3-0 Grand Rapids at 24 seconds into the third period.

The Thunderhawks' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four Bemidji power plays. The Lumberjacks were unable to stop Grand Rapids from sending pucks towards the net, and the Thunderhawks eventually piled up 48 shots on goal. Grand Rapids' goal total was higher than its season average. This season, the Thunderhawks average 2.5 goals per contest.

Grand Rapids additionally got points from Peterson, who also racked up one goal and two assists. Zach Frazier also scored for Grand Rapids. Other players who recorded assists for Grand Rapids were Shaffer Holum, Patrick Rajala, Quinn Mishcke, and Hunter Shepard, who each chipped in one.

Grand Rapids' defense shut down Bemidji's forwards for much of the game, and the Lumberjacks got off only 14 shots during the contest. Bemidji's penalty kill unit could not stop the Thunderhawks' power play, which converted on two of three opportunities.

Grand Rapids' Shepard stopped 14 shots out of the 14 that he faced. The Thunderhawks ended with 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major. Gabe Heifort made 43 saves for the Lumberjacks on 48 shots. Bemidji incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors.
