Edina uses fast start to beat Grand Rapids, 6-2Braemar Arena Thu, Dec 20, 2012 The Edina Hornets jumped out to a four-point advantage by the end of the first period and beat the Grand Rapids Thunderhawks, 6-2. Connor Hurley had two goals and one assist to lead Edina. Hurley scored the first of his two goals at 13:01 into the first period to make the score 3-0 Edina. Dylan Malmquist assisted on the tally. Hurley's next tally made the score 5-0 Edina with 12:58 left in the second period. The Hornets' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on three Grand Rapids power plays. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with three goals. The 43 shots that Edina put on net surpassed the Hornets' average of 18.6 shots per game this season. Edina also got points from Tyler Nanne, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Hayden Anderson also scored for Edina. Other players who recorded assists for Edina were Ben Hull, Anthony Walsh, Andy Jordahl, Miguel Fidler, and Dan Hinueber, who contributed one a piece. By firing 16 shots on goal, Grand Rapids exceeded the 2.6 shots it averages per game this year. The Thunderhawks' normally stingy defense allowed more goals than usual. Grand Rapids averages 1.9 goal allowed per game. The Thunderhawks' defensemen bolstered Grand Rapids' offensive attack, as they bombarded Willie Benjamin with seven shots. Benjamin recorded 14 saves for Edina. The Hornets totaled nine minutes in penalty time with two minors and one major and went 1-for-2 on the power play. Hunter Shepard made 37 saves for the Thunderhawks on 43 shots. Grand Rapids incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
