Mahtomedi holds on for 5-3 win against Spring Lake Park

The Mahtomedi Zephyers survived a determined comeback attempt by the Spring Lake Park Panthers on the way to a 5-3 win.

Mahtomedi made the score 5-1 on a goal by Reid Mathson at 12:22 in the second period, and Spring Lake Park got as close as 5-3 when Nick Heid scored 6:43 into the third period.

Mac Rathmanner had one goal and three assists to lead the Zephyers. Rathmanner scored 5:13 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Mahtomedi. Adam Boben picked up the assist.

Mahtomedi's offense rang up 31 shots on the Panthers' net. The Zephyers struggled to stay out of the sin bin throughout the game as they finished the game with 14 penalty minutes for five opposing power plays. Mahtomedi got an offensive boost from its blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game.

Others who scored for Mahtomedi included Kellen Campbell, who had one and Jake Erickson, who had two. Other players who recorded assists for Mahtomedi were Zack Taylor, Cory Bruggeman, Cosimo Yapello, Matt Bonine, and Jack Becker, who contributed one a piece.

The Zephyers' defense shut down Spring Lake Park's forwards for much of the game, and the Panthers got off only nine shots during the contest. Spring Lake Park could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 26 minutes in penalties during the game.

Spring Lake Park also got a goal from Austen Long as well. More assists for Spring Lake Park came via Deven Sunell, who had two and Noah Bormann and Brandon Richards, who each chipped in one.

Mahtomedi's Colin Denis stopped six shots out of the nine that he faced. The Zephyers registered three goals on 13 power play opportunities. JT Hirschi made 26 saves for the Panthers on 31 shots.
