Blaine uses big second period to beat Champlin Park, 7-0

The Champlin Park Rebels was within striking distance after one period, but the Blaine Bengals put the pedal down in the second en route to a 7-0 victory.

Champlin Park's power play was ineffective against Blaine's penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

The Bengals were paced by Joey Lau, who racked up one goal. Lau scored 9:39 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Blaine. Dallas Gerads assisted on the tally.

Blaine's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on seven Champlin Park power plays. The Bengals' defensive effort looked to be improved. Blaine averages 2.4 goals allowed per game. The Bengals bested their season scoring average. This season, Blaine averages 4.4 goals per contest. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with three goals. With 49 shots on target during the contest, the Bengals exceeded the 1.9 shot they average per game this year. Blaine could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 16 minutes in penalties during the game.

Blaine additionally got points from Mac Nadeau, who also had one goal and one assist and Luke Notermann, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Blaine included Ian Scheid, who had two and Tyler Maki and Tyler Cline, who each put in one. More assists for Blaine came via Jesse Norling, who had two and Zack Wylie, Tanner Tufte, and James Simmer, who contributed one a piece.

The Rebels were held below their usual level of production. Champlin Park averages 2.3 goals per game.

James Simmer made 18 saves for the Bengals on 18 shots. Blaine registered zero goals on two power play opportunities. The Rebels' Tyler Nelson stopped 42 shots out of the 49 that he faced. Champlin Park incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with three minors.
