Besse leads Benilde St. Margarets over Maple Grove, 5-1

Behind a great game by Grant Besse, who had two goals and two assists, the Benilde St. Margarets Red Knights defeated the Maple Grove Crimson, 5-1.

Besse found the back of the net short handed 9:33 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Benilde St. Margarets and again while 9:18 into the third to make the score 4-1 Benilde St. Margarets.

Benilde St. Margarets was led by goalie Andrew Sprang, who finished with 32 saves while allowing one goal. The solid play of Sprang will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 3.08.

The 26 shots that the Red Knights put on net surpassed Benilde St. Margarets' average of 22.2 shots per game this season. The Red Knights could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 14 minutes in penalties during the game.

Benilde St. Margarets also got points from Spencer Naas, who also finished with three goals and one assist. In addition, Benilde St. Margarets received assists from Ben Newhouse, who had one and Nate Labosky, who had four.

Maple Grove forced Benilde St. Margarets goalie Sprang to work between the pipes, taking 33 shots.

The Crimson were led by Sam Valerius, who scored the team's only goal. Valerius scored on the power play 16:10 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Benilde St. Margarets. A high sticking penalty on Chase Jungels had put Maple Grove on the power play. Chris Freemark picked up the assist.

The Red Knights registered two goals on five power play opportunities. The Crimson's John Danielson stopped 21 shots out of the 26 that he faced. Maple Grove totaled 21 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major and went 1-for-6 on the power play. The Crimson ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Jake Abernathy was ejected from the game.
