Edina rips Maple Grove, 8-1

The Maple Grove Crimson had trouble finding ways to stop the Edina Hornets, which beat Crimson, 8-1.

Edina got the win thanks to a great game by Connor Hurley, who had two goals and two assists. Hurley scored the first of his two goals at 6:22 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Edina. Tyler Nanne picked up the assist. Hurley's next tally made the score 3-0 Edina with 7:24 left in the first period. A too many men penalty on David Brumm had put the Hornets on the power play. Parker Reno assisted on the tally.

Edina was led by goalie Willie Benjamin, who finished with 27 saves while allowing one goal. The solid play of Benjamin will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 1.18.

The Hornets surpassed their usual scoring output this season. Edina averages 5.6 goals per game. The Hornets was effective with a man advantage, and put in four goals while on the power play. With 35 shots on target during the contest, Edina exceeded the 15.6 shots it averages per game this year.

Edina also got points from Ben Hull, who also registered one goal and one assist and Dylan Malmquist, who also racked up two goals and one assist. Edina also got a goal from Andy Jordahl as well. More assists for Edina came via Matt Nelson, who had two and Hayden Anderson, Cullen Munson, Miguel Fidler, and Bo Brauer, who each chipped in one.

The 28 shots that Maple Grove put on net surpassed the Crimson's average of 9.3 shots per game this season. Maple Grove was hit hard by penalties in the contest, and totaled seven minors and one major for 19 minutes in penalty time. The Crimson's defensemen bolstered Maple Grove's offensive attack, as they bombarded Benjamin with 14 shots.

The Hornets ended with 23 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major. For Edina, Nelson was ejected from the game. The Crimson's John Danielson stopped 27 shots out of the 35 that he faced. Maple Grove registered one goal on four power play opportunities.
