Knutson's big game bests Woodbury in 5-2 Mounds View win

The Mounds View Mustangs' Max Knutson had a big offensive game, scoring one goal and contributing two assists in his team's 5-2 win over the Woodbury Royals.

Knutson got on the board by slotting home a short handed goal 4:22 into the second period to make the score 2-2. Mounds View was on a disadvantage when AJ Rupert went off the ice for high sticking. Knutson dished an assist on Jacob Tretsven's goal that made the score 3-2 Mounds View at 12:40 into the second period. He added another helper on Ryan Elvidge's goal that made the score 5-2 Mounds View at 15:34 into the third period.

The Mustangs' penalty kill excelled, as Mounds View gave up one goal despite allowing six power plays.

The Mustangs' offense was clicking better than usual and put 27 shots on goal during the game, better than the 0.2 shots per game they average. Mounds View's defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals.

Mounds View additionally got points from Tretsven, who also registered one goal and one assist. Mounds View also got a goal from Matt Hunt as well. In addition, Mounds View received assists from Andrew Bjorklund and John Sarafolean, who contributed one a piece.

Woodbury managed to stay out of the box better than usual, totaling one minor for two minutes in penalty time. The Royals wound up below its season average of 8.0 penalty minutes per game.

Woodbury was helped by Dan Armstrong, who grabbed one goal. Armstrong scored 14:46 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Jordan Graham provided the assist. Woodbury also got points from Graham, who also had one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Woodbury were Ford Pendleton, who had one.

Brandon Smith recorded 23 saves for the Mustangs. Mounds View incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. The Royals' Austen Macalus stopped 22 shots out of the 27 that he faced.
