Luverne takes care of Breckenridge/Wahpeton early, wins 12-1Luverne High School Sat, Jan 19, 2013 The Luverne Cardinals opened up a seven-goal lead after the first period and did not look back en route to a 12-1 over the Breckenridge/Wahpeton Blades. Jonny Solma had five goals and two assists to lead Luverne. Solma notched his first tally 7:31 into the first period. He then added goals at 4:12 into the second, at 5:05 into the second, at 16:37 into the second, and at 6:37 into the third. The Cardinals managed to stay out of the box better than usual, totaling one minor for two minutes in penalty time. Luverne finished below its season average of 7.0 penalty minutes per game. Breckenridge/Wahpeton was unable to stop the Cardinals from sending pucks towards the net, and Luverne eventually piled up 48 shots on goal. The Cardinals bested their season scoring average. This season, Luverne averages 6.6 goals per contest. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals. Luverne also got points from Austin Maxwell, who also tallied one goal and three assists, Connor Hoffman, who also registered one goal and one assist, Gunnar Olson, who also had one goal and one assist, and Skyler Wenninger, who also racked up one goal and four assists. Others who scored for Luverne included Logan Norman, who had one and Jordan Dingmann, who had two. In addition, Luverne received assists from Kendall Meyer, Cole Desplinter, Chaz Smedsrud, and Travis Frakes, who contributed one a piece and Matthew Sterrett and Toby Sengvongxay, who each chipped in three. The Blades' offense were handcuffed by the Cardinals' defensive play, and Breckenridge/Wahpeton managed only nine shots on goal during the game. Kendall Meyer made eight saves for Luverne on nine shots. The Cardinals registered two goals on two power play opportunities. Michael Withuski recorded 36 saves for the Blades. Breckenridge/Wahpeton totaled 17 minutes in penalty time with one minor and one major and went 0-for-1 on the power play.
