Wadena-Deer Creek downs Eveleth-Gilbert in overtime, 5-4 (OT)

Mitchell Swanson gave the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines a 5-4 (OT) victory over the Eveleth-Gilbert Golden Bears when he scored 2:08 into the extra period.

Wadena-Deer Creek came back from a four-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Wolverines was down 4-0 after a goal by Eveleth-Gilbert's Zach Skelton at 3:39 in the second period. Wadena-Deer Creek knotted things up at 4-4 on a power play goal by Bridger Pettit at 13:16 in the third period.

Swanson had two goals to lead the Wolverines to victory.

Wadena-Deer Creek put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Golden Bears to score on any of their seven power plays. The Wolverines' offense operated below they season average. Wadena-Deer Creek averages 7.5 goals per game. Eveleth-Gilbert was unable to stop the Wolverines from sending pucks towards the net, and Wadena-Deer Creek eventually piled up 39 shots on goal. The Wolverines could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 14 minutes in penalties during the game. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals.

Wadena-Deer Creek additionally got points from Mike Behl, who also tallied one goal and one assist, Pettit, who also had one goal and one assist, and Dylan Phillips, who also registered one goal and one assist. More assists for Wadena-Deer Creek came via Otto Asp and Mike Paavola, who each chipped in one and Christian Berg and Jake Krause, who contributed two a piece.

The Golden Bears forced Wadena-Deer Creek goalie Cory McManigle to work between the pipes, taking 32 shots. Eveleth-Gilbert's defense let in more goals than it usually has this year. The Golden Bears are averaging 2.5 goals against for the season.

Eveleth-Gilbert was helped by Sam Roberts, who racked up one goal. Roberts scored 4:33 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Eveleth-Gilbert. Nick Moe assisted on the tally. Eveleth-Gilbert also got points from Skelton, who also finished with one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Eveleth-Gilbert also got a goal from Mitchell Huffman as well. Other players who recorded assists for Eveleth-Gilbert were Richard Craven, who had one.

The Wolverines' McManigle stopped 28 shots out of the 32 that he faced. Wadena-Deer Creek registered one goal on six power play opportunities. Derek Hirsch rejected 34 shots on goal for the Golden Bears. Eveleth-Gilbert ended with 25 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major. The Golden Bears ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Craven was ejected from the game.
