Waconia rides Kovach to victory over New Ulm, 3-1Waconia Ice Arena Thu, Feb 07, 2013 The Waconia Wildcats relied on the sparkling performance of Nathan Kovach in net to grab a 3-1 win against the New Ulm Eagles. New Ulm's power play was ineffective against Waconia's penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded. The Wildcats were led by Ryan Mattson, who registered one goal. Mattson scored 12:42 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Waconia. Justin Reinke picked up the assist. The Waconia penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled seven minors and one major for 19 minutes in penalty time. The Wildcats surpassed its season average of 9.0 penalty minutes per game. Waconia kept the Eagles' goalie busy throughout the game, and Brach Kraus made 30 saves on 33 shots. Waconia also got a goal from Ben Kullman as well. In addition, Waconia received assists from Blaine Wilsey and Sam Schiffman, who each chipped in one. New Ulm's offense operated below it season average. The Eagles average 3.8 goals per game. New Ulm forced the Wildcats goalie Kovach to work between the pipes, taking 45 shots. The Eagles were led by Brandon Helget, who scored the team's only goal. Helget scored on the power play 10:02 into the second period to make the score 1-1. New Ulm had gotten the advantage when Waconia's Kullman was sent off for boarding. Judd Davis assisted on the tally. The Wildcats' Kovach stopped 44 shots out of the 45 that he faced. Waconia registered one goal on three power play opportunities. The Eagles incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
