St. Cloud Apollo beats Sauk Rapids-Rice 7-3 as Kenney gets hat trick

Paul Kenney lifted the St. Cloud Apollo Eagles to a 7-3 victory with a hat trick against the Sauk Rapids-Rice Storm.

Kenney got on the scoresheet 13:37 into the first period. He then added goals at 10:18 into the second and at 3:42 into the third.

St. Cloud Apollo forced Sauk Rapids-Rice goalie William Mortenson to work between the pipes, taking 38 shots. The Eagles surpassed their usual scoring output this season. This season, St. Cloud Apollo averages 4.3 goals per contest. The Eagles got an offensive boost from their blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game. St. Cloud Apollo was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 18 penalty minutes.

St. Cloud Apollo also got points from Jared Christen, who also grabbed one goal and four assists to lead the team in points, Dallas Haugen, who also had one goal and one assist, Grady Ewing, who also registered one goal and one assist, and Jordan Keller, who also racked up one goal and one assist. In addition, St. Cloud Apollo received assists from Erik Jarosch, Tanner Breidenbach, Jason Omann, and Brandon Bloch, who contributed one a piece.

The Storm were led by Mathew Meyer, who tallied one goal and one assist. Meyer scored on the power play 9:22 into the third period to make the score 6-1 St. Cloud Apollo. Sauk Rapids-Rice had gotten the advantage when the Eagles' Haugen was sent off for charging. Joey Streeter assisted on the tally. Sauk Rapids-Rice also got a goal from Brandon Duray as well. Other players who recorded assists for Sauk Rapids-Rice were Travis Kothenbeutel and Tyler Long, who each chipped in one.

St. Cloud Apollo's Nick Althaus stopped 19 shots out of the 22 that he faced. The Eagles registered three goals on two power play opportunities. William Mortenson made 31 saves for the Storm on 38 shots. Sauk Rapids-Rice incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
