Worthington falls to Redwood Valley in overtime, 5-4 (OT)Redwood Area Community Center Thu, Feb 07, 2013 The Redwood Valley Cardinals pulled out a 5-4 (OT) overtime victory over the Worthington Trojans on a clutch goal by Austin Kretsch. Redwood Valley overcame a three-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Cardinals was down 3-0 after a goal by Worthington's Andrew Johnson at 5:05 in the first period. Redwood Valley tied things up at 4-4 on a goal by Levi Leach at 9:36 in the third period. The Cardinals got the win behind a great game by Kretsch, who had two goals and two assists. Kretsch scored the first of his two goals at 14:24 into the first period to make the score 3-2 Worthington. Jacob Prouty provided the assist. Kretsch's next tally made the score 5-4 Redwood Valley with 13:28 left in overtime. Logan Sandgren picked up the assist. Redwood Valley excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances. The Cardinals kept the Trojans' goalie busy throughout the game, and Ryan Scholtes made 30 saves on 35 shots. Redwood Valley bested its season scoring average. The Cardinals have scored at the pace of 2.4 goals per game during the current campaign. Redwood Valley also got a goal from Chris Hallden as well. In addition, Redwood Valley received assists from Lane Stadther and Colin Fuhr, who each chipped in one. Worthington forced Redwood Valley goalie Jordan Houle to work between the pipes, taking 50 shots. The Trojans were helped by Nathan Patten, who finished with one goal. Patten scored 1:48 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Worthington. Jacob Oberloh assisted on the tally. Worthington also got points from Johnson, who also grabbed one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Nick Newman also scored for Worthington. Other players who recorded assists for Worthington were Rylan Baumhofner and Kody Honius, who contributed one a piece. Houle rejected 46 shots on goal for the Cardinals. Redwood Valley incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors. Worthington incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
