Luverne beats Princeton 7-4 as Wenninger gets hat trick

A hat trick by Skyler Wenninger was the highlight in Cardinals' 7-4 win against the Princeton Tigers.

Wenninger's first goal came 16:20 into the first period. He then added goals at 3:50 into the second and at 14 seconds into the third.

The Luverne Cardinals stifled Princeton's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Luverne kept the Tigers' goalie busy throughout the game, and Max Mattson made 29 saves on 36 shots. The Cardinals' defense let in more goals than it usually has this year. Luverne averages 1.6 goal allowed per game. The Cardinals' defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals.

Luverne also got points from Connor Hoffman, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Jackson Frankenhoff also scored for Luverne. Other players who recorded assists for Luverne were Chaz Smedsrud, who had one, Travis Frakes, who had two, and Jonny Solma, who had three.

Princeton's offense operated below it season average. The Tigers average 6.2 goals per game. Princeton forced Luverne goalie Kendall Meyer to work between the pipes, taking 32 shots.

The Tigers were led by Dan Muench, who registered one goal and two assists. Muench scored 16:54 into the second period to make the score 4-2 Luverne. Collin Buness assisted on the tally. Princeton additionally got points from A.J. Wesloh, who also had one goal and one assist and Buness, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Princeton also got a goal from Jake Green as well. More assists for Princeton came via Tyler Leverty and Justin Sjoquist, who contributed one a piece.

Kendall Meyer made 28 saves for the Cardinals on 32 shots. Luverne incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors. Princeton incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors.
