GAME RECAP

Holy Family Catholic's Gersich deadly on offense in 6-1 win against Orono

Orono Ice Arena    Thu, Feb 14, 2013

The Holy Family Catholic Fire relied on the scoring touch of Shane Gersich, who netted four goals, to beat the Orono Spartans, 6-1.

Gersich's first goal came 14:42 into the first period. He then added goals at 14:50 into the first, at 15:22 into the first, and at 13:40 into the second.

Orono's power play was ineffective against Holy Family Catholic's penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

The Fire could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 14 minutes in penalties during the game. Holy Family Catholic put 38 shots on net during the contest, more than the 2.6 it averages per game.

Garret Riebling also scored for Holy Family Catholic. Other players who recorded assists for Holy Family Catholic were Joey Marooney, who had two, Jonh Peterson, who had three, and Matt Runyon and Dylan Woolf, who each chipped in one.

The Spartans did not reach the goal total they have come to expect this season. Orono puts an average of 3.4 pucks into the net per game. The Spartans struggled to stay out of the sin bin throughout the game as they finished the game with 14 penalty minutes for six opposing power plays.

Orono was led by Sam Challgren, who scored the team's only goal. Challgren scored on the power play 7:19 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Holy Family Catholic. Gavin Payne assisted on the tally.

Derek LaCombe rejected 17 shots on goal for the Fire. Jon Flakne recorded 32 saves for the Spartans.
