Early goals doom Fairmont, falls to New Ulm, 9-3New Ulm Civic Center Tue, Dec 18, 2012 A five-goal first period deficit cost the Fairmont Cardinals, which could not recover and fell to the New Ulm Eagles, 9-3. Blake Neumann was all over the ice for New Ulm, as he tallied four goals and one assist in the win. Neumann got on the scoresheet 5:26 into the first period. He then added goals at 15:07 into the first, at 3:28 into the third, and at 3:46 into the third. The Eagles forced Fairmont goalie Colton Cunning to work between the pipes, taking 41 shots. New Ulm found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. This season, the Eagles average 4.1 goals per contest. New Ulm additionally got points from Brandon Helget, who also had one goal and one assist and Brach Kraus, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. New Ulm also got a goal from Cole Dulas as well. More assists for New Ulm came via Chad Ludewig, who had two, Wyatt Peterson, who had four, and Alex Stark and Jon Kopacek, who each chipped in one. New Ulm's defense shut down the Cardinals' forwards for much of the game, and Fairmont got off only 12 shots during the contest. The Cardinals' defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals. Fairmont was led by Greg Claeys, who registered two goals and one assist. Claeys scored the first of his two goals at 9:49 into the first period to make the score 3-1 New Ulm. Claeys' next tally made the score 7-3 New Ulm with 9:43 left in the second period. The Cardinals had gotten the advantage when the Eagles' Stark was sent off for too many men. Joe Nordquist assisted on the tally. Fairmont also got points from Grant Becker, who also finished with one goal and one assist. In addition, Fairmont received assists from Matthew Lytle, who had one. Kraus rejected nine shots on goal for New Ulm. The Eagles incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors. Fairmont's Cunning stopped 32 shots out of the 41 that he faced. The Cardinals incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
