Mound-Westonka squeaks by Holy Family Catholic, 5-3

The game between the Mound-Westonka Whitehawks and the Holy Family Catholic Fire was tight through all 60 minutes, but in the end Mound-Westonka emerged with a 5-3 win.

No lead was more than two goals during the contest, and the winning goal was scored by Hunter Smith at 3:11 of the second period.

The Whitehawks got the win thanks to a great game by Tommy Ewing, who had two goals and one assist. Ewing scored the first of his two goals at 14:02 into the second period to make the score 4-2 Mound-Westonka. Jack Brandstetter provided the assist. Ewing's next tally made the score 5-3 Mound-Westonka with 7:41 left in the third period. A hooking penalty on Dylan Woolf had put Mound-Westonka on the power play. Ben O Barsky picked up the assist.

The Whitehawks' offense was clicking better than usual and put 46 shots on goal during the game, better than the 1.0 shot per game they average.

Mound-Westonka also got points from Smith, who also had one goal and two assists to lead the team in points and Brandstetter, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Blake Brady also scored for Mound-Westonka. In addition, Mound-Westonka received assists from Kyle Luehman, Charlie Curti, and Tory Robinett, who contributed one a piece.

The Holy Family Catholic penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled five minors and three majors for 35 minutes in penalty time. The Fire surpassed its season average of 15.0 penalty minutes per game. Holy Family Catholic put 39 shots on net during the contest, more than the 3.3 it averages per game.

The Fire were led by Jonh Peterson, who racked up two goals and one assist. Peterson scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 14:07 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Holy Family Catholic had taken the advantage when Mound-Westonka's Jeremy Schulz got sent off for checking from behind. Joey Marooney provided the assist. Peterson's next tally on the power play made the score 4-3 Mound-Westonka with 4:16 left in the second period. Shane Gersich picked up the assist. Holy Family Catholic additionally got points from Will Garin, who also registered one goal and one assist. More assists for Holy Family Catholic came via Garret Riebling, who had one.

Andy Seats recorded 36 saves for the Whitehawks. Mound-Westonka totaled 25 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 2-for-7 on the power play. The Fire's Derek LaCombe stopped 41 shots out of the 46 that he faced. Holy Family Catholic registered one goal on five power play opportunities.
