Mound-Westonka completes comeback, beats St. Michael-Albertville, 5-4

The Mound-Westonka Whitehawks climbed out of a two-goal hole to beat the St. Michael-Albertville Knights, 5-4.

Mound-Westonka let multiple leads slip away before eventually digging out of a two hole to pick up the win. The Whitehawks took a 3-2 advantage on a goal by Jack Brandstetter at 11:32 in the first period. Mound-Westonka went down 2-0 after St. Michael-Albertville's Tyler Hayes put the puck home at 4:15 in the first period. After evening things up at 4-4 on a goal by Cade Gamrath at 6:26 in the third, the Whitehawks got the game-winner from Hunter Smith at 9:30 in the third period.

Smith had two goals and one assist to lead Mound-Westonka. Smith scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 6:05 into the third period to make the score 4-3 Mound-Westonka. The Whitehawks had taken the advantage when the Knights' Mike Ryan got sent off for tripping. Charlie Curti picked up the assist. Smith's next tally on the power play made the score 5-4 Mound-Westonka with 10:30 left in the third period. Brandstetter provided the assist.

Mound-Westonka kept St. Michael-Albertville's goalie busy throughout the game, and Matt Borgen made 34 saves on 39 shots.

Mound-Westonka also got points from Brandstetter, who also tallied one goal and one assist and Curti, who also registered one goal and one assist. Mound-Westonka also got a goal from Jack Sterne as well. More assists for Mound-Westonka came via Tommy Ewing, who had two and Sander Lee and Ben O Barsky, who each chipped in one.

David Anderson also scored for St. Michael-Albertville. In addition, St. Michael-Albertville received assists from Aaron Michaelson, Nate Fischbach, and Jon Gibbs, who contributed one a piece.

Andy Seats made 25 saves for the Whitehawks on 29 shots. Mound-Westonka incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors. The Knights incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
