Mattson's big game bests Minnehaha Academy in 7-2 Waconia win

The Waconia Wildcats' Ryan Mattson had a big offensive game, scoring two goals and contributing three assists in his team's 7-2 win over the Minnehaha Academy Red Hawks.

Mattson scored at 34 seconds into the second period to make the score 1-1 and again while on the power play 7:19 into the third to make the score 5-1 Waconia.

Minnehaha Academy was doomed by its poor performance on special teams, as Waconia was able to score four times while on the power play.

The Red Hawks were unable to stop the Wildcats from sending pucks towards the net, and Waconia eventually piled up 47 shots on goal. The Wildcats surpassed their usual scoring output this season. Waconia has scored at the pace of 3.8 goals per game during the current campaign.

Waconia additionally got points from Tanner Riebel, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Kevin Kittleson, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Waconia included Cal Rassman, who had one and Blaine Wilsey, who had two. Other players who recorded assists for Waconia were Justin Reinke, who had three and Tony Fulkerson and Colin Reuse, who each chipped in one.

Minnehaha Academy was helped by Ryan Leo, who registered one goal. Leo scored on the power play 11:42 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Minnehaha Academy. The Red Hawks earned a power play opportunity when Reuse was put in the box for interference. Luke Erickson provided the assist. Minnehaha Academy also got points from Ryan Evenson, who also had one goal and one assist. More assists for Minnehaha Academy came via Zach Newton, who had one.

The Wildcats' Nathan Kovach stopped 18 shots out of the 20 that he faced. Waconia incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors. Matt Sawyer rejected 40 shots on goal for Minnehaha Academy. The Red Hawks totaled nine minutes in penalty time with two minors and one major and went 1-for-3 on the power play.
