GAME RECAP

Luverne survives penalties, beats Minnehaha Academy, 2-1

Minnehaha Academy Ice Arena    Fri, Feb 15, 2013

The Luverne Cardinals' penalty kill was superb, as Luverne survived multiple penalties to beat the Minnehaha Academy Red Hawks, 2-1.

The Cardinals were paced by Gunnar Olson, who tallied one goal. Olson scored on the power play 8:31 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Luverne.

Luverne did not reach the goal total it has come to expect this season. The Cardinals put an average of 6.2 pucks into the net per game. Minnehaha Academy was unable to stop Luverne from sending pucks towards the net, and the Cardinals eventually piled up 36 shots on goal. Luverne struggled to stay out of the sin bin throughout the game as it finished the game with 14 penalty minutes for seven opposing power plays.

Luverne also got a goal from Skyler Wenninger as well.

The Red Hawks were held below their usual level of production. Minnehaha Academy averages 3.2 goals per game.

The Red Hawks were led by Ryan Leo, who scored the team's only goal. Leo scored on the power play seven seconds into the second period to make the score 1-1. Ryan Evenson assisted on the tally.

Kendall Meyer made 18 saves for the Cardinals on 19 shots. Luverne registered one goal on five power play opportunities. Matt Sawyer rejected 34 shots on goal for Minnehaha Academy. The Red Hawks incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
