Luverne uses fast start to beat Worthington, 13-1PSI Internal Staff Tue, Jan 29, 2013 The Worthington Trojans fell behind early, and the Luverne Cardinals kept piling on the points on the way to a 13-1 victory. Luverne got the win behind a great game by Skyler Wenninger, who had two goals and five assists. Wenninger scored the first of his two goals at 7:09 into the second period to make the score 9-1 Luverne. Jonny Solma assisted on the tally. Wenninger's next tally made the score 12-1 Luverne with 12:45 left in the third period. The Cardinals had gained a power play chance when Seth Meier was whistled for checking from behind. Chaz Smedsrud provided the assist. Worthington was unable to stop Luverne from sending pucks towards the net, and the Cardinals eventually piled up 68 shots on goal. Luverne found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. This season, the Cardinals average 6.5 goals per contest. Luverne also got points from Andrew Verhey, who also tallied one goal and one assist, Jackson Frankenhoff, who also racked up two goals and one assist, Smedsrud, who also registered five goals and one assist, Solma, who also had two goals and one assist, and Connor Hoffman, who also tallied one goal and three assists. In addition, Luverne received assists from Austin Maxwell, who had two and Jordan Dingmann, Logan Norman, Mark Spreiter, Matthew Sterrett, Cole Walgrave, and Gunnar Olson, who each chipped in one. The Trojans did not reach the goal total they have come to expect this season. Worthington puts an average of 3.3 pucks into the net per game. The Trojans did not challenge the opposing netminder, only getting 12 shots on net to force 11 saves. Connor Crabtree recorded 11 saves for Luverne. The Cardinals ended with no penalties and went 2-for-4 on the power play. Ryan Scholtes made 55 saves for Worthington on 68 shots. The Trojans ended with 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major and had no power play opportunities.
