Luverne wins tough contest against Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato, 4-2

The Luverne Cardinals and the Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato Dragons were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Luverne made the most of its opportunities and won, 4-2.

Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Toby Sengvongxay's goal in the third period proved to be the difference maker.

Sengvongxay was all over the ice for the Cardinals, as he tallied two goals in the win.

Luverne forced Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato goalie Braeden Wahl to work between the pipes, taking 53 shots. The defensemen of the Cardinals were also effective in the Dragons' zone, and came away with two goals.

Gunnar Olson also scored for Luverne. In addition, Luverne received assists from Logan Norman, who had two and Chaz Smedsrud, Travis Frakes, Austin Maxwell, and Jonny Solma, who each chipped in one.

Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato did not challenge the opposing netminder, only getting 14 shots on net to force 12 saves.

The Dragons were helped by Aaron Haataja, who finished with one goal and one assist. Haataja scored 2:18 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Luverne. Mike Spreiter provided the assist. Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato additionally got points from Spreiter, who also grabbed one goal and one assist.

Kendall Meyer made 12 saves for Luverne on 14 shots. The Cardinals incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors. Wahl rejected 49 shots on goal for Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato. The Dragons totaled 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 0-for-1 on the power play.
