Fairmont survives Redwood Valley comeback, wins 5-4

The Redwood Valley Cardinals tried their best to erase a three-goal deficit, but the Fairmont Cardinals would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 5-4.

Fairmont made the score 5-2 on a goal by Matthew Lytle at 10:42 in the second period, and Redwood Valley got as close as 5-4 when Logan Sandgren scored 12:20 into the third period.

Lytle was all over the ice for the Cardinals, as he tallied two goals and two assists in the win. Lytle scored the first of his two goals at 10:51 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Fairmont. Grant Becker provided the assist. Lytle's next tally made the score Fairmont with 9:18 left in the second period. Joe Nordquist picked up the assist.

Fairmont bested its season scoring average. The Cardinals average 1.8 goal per game. Fairmont could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 16 minutes in penalties during the game.

Fairmont additionally got points from Becker, who also tallied one goal and two assists. Fairmont also got a goal from Ben Mitchell as well. In addition, Fairmont received assists from Greg Claeys, who had one.

The Cardinals were led by Chris Hallden, who registered two goals and one assist. Hallden scored the first of his two goals at 1:40 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Fairmont. Hallden's next tally made the score 5-3 Fairmont with 8:17 left in the third period. Redwood Valley played down a man on Jacob Prouty's tripping. Redwood Valley also got points from Sandgren, who also had one goal and one assist. Zach Blum also scored for Redwood Valley. More assists for Redwood Valley came via Koillin Joines, who had one.

Colton Cunning recorded 25 saves for the Cardinals. Fairmont registered one goal on five power play opportunities. The Cardinals' Jordan Houle stopped 19 shots out of the 24 that he faced. Redwood Valley incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
