Luverne takes care of Fairmont early, wins 11-0Martin County Arena Tue, Dec 11, 2012 A five-goal first period deficit cost the Fairmont Cardinals, which could not recover and fell to the Luverne Cardinals, 11-0. Skyler Wenninger had two goals and one assist to lead Luverne. Wenninger scored the first of his two goals at 37 seconds into the first period to make the score 1-0 Luverne. Jonny Solma assisted on the tally. Wenninger's next tally made the score 3-0 Luverne with 13:32 left in the first period. Solma provided the assist. The Cardinals kept Fairmont's goalie busy throughout the game, and Colton Cunning made 42 saves on 53 shots. Luverne found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. The Cardinals have scored at the pace of 6.0 goals per game during the current campaign. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with four goals. Luverne also got points from Jordan Dingmann, who also registered one goal and three assists, Chaz Smedsrud, who also had one goal and two assists, Logan Norman, who also racked up two goals and one assist, and Gunnar Olson, who also tallied two goals and three assists to lead the team in points. Others who scored for Luverne included Cole Desplinter, who had one and Toby Sengvongxay, who had two. In addition, Luverne received assists from Connor Crabtree, who had two and Jackson Frankenhoff, Travis Frakes, Mark Spreiter, Austin Maxwell, and Andrew Jelken, who contributed one a piece. The Cardinals did not challenge the opposing netminder, only getting nine shots on net to force nine saves. Crabtree rejected nine shots on goal for Luverne. The Cardinals incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors. Fairmont totaled 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major and went 0-for-2 on the power play.
