Duluth Denfeld squeaks by Hermantown, 5-4

In a game where neither team could get a cushion, the Duluth Denfeld Hunters escaped with a 5-4 victory over the Hermantown Hawks.

No lead was more than one goal during the contest, and the winning goal was scored by Trey Opack at 14:05 of the third period.

Duluth Denfeld got the win thanks to a great game by Opack, who had two goals and one assist. Opack scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 3:07 into the second period to make the score 2-2. Steven Maciver provided the assist. Opack's next tally on the power play made the score 5-4 Duluth Denfeld with 5:55 left in the third period.

With 19 shots on target during the contest, the Hunters exceeded the 0.2 shots they average per game this year. Duluth Denfeld's penalty kill unit could not stop Hermantown's power play, which converted on two of three opportunities.

Duluth Denfeld also got points from Levi Talarico, who also finished with one goal and two assists and Reid Lemker, who also had one goal and one assist. Alex Thomspon also scored for Duluth Denfeld. More assists for Duluth Denfeld came via Nick Thompson, who had two.

The Hawks forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up seven minors and two majors for 24 minutes in penalty time. Hermantown had been averaging 13.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Hawks could not produce up to they normal offensive output. Hermantown puts an average of 7.3 pucks into the net per game. The Hawks kept the Hunters' goalie busy throughout the game, and Zach Thompson made 42 saves on 46 shots. Hermantown's defense let in more goals than it usually has this year. The Hawks average 1.8 goal allowed per game.

Hermantown was led by Chris Benson, who tallied one goal and two assists. Benson scored 12:39 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Hermantown. Ryan Carlson assisted on the tally. Hermantown additionally got points from Travis Koepke, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Hermantown also got a goal from Bo Gronseth as well. In addition, Hermantown received assists from Zach Kramer, who had one and Jake Zeleznikar, who had two.

Duluth Denfeld totaled 23 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major and went 2-for-4 on the power play. For the Hunters, Patrick Potswald was ejected from the game. Jace Thomas rejected 14 shots on goal for the Hawks.
