Brainerd wins tough contest against St. Cloud Apollo, 3-2Brainerd - Essentia Health SC Tue, Jan 22, 2013 The Brainerd Warriors and the St. Cloud Apollo Eagles were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Brainerd made the most of its opportunities and won, 3-2. Neither team gained more than a one-goal lead, and Cole Smith's goal in the third period proved to be the difference maker. The Warriors were led by Smith, who racked up one goal. Smith scored 15:59 into the third period to make the score 3-2 Brainerd. Brainerd put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow St. Cloud Apollo to score on any of its five power plays. Brainerd also got a goal from Christopher Pohlkamp as well. More assists for Brainerd came via Logan Rivard, who had one. The Eagles' offense operated below they season average. St. Cloud Apollo averages 4.3 goals per game. The Eagles were helped by Jason Omann, who finished with one goal. Omann scored 15:36 into the first period to make the score 2-1 St. Cloud Apollo. Jared Christen picked up the assist. St. Cloud Apollo also got points from Christen, who also racked up one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. In addition, St. Cloud Apollo received assists from Paul Kenney and Jordan Keller, who each chipped in one. Captain Kyle Helmberger rejected 22 shots on goal for the Warriors. Brainerd totaled 23 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major and went 0-for-2 on the power play. Nick Althaus recorded 19 saves for St. Cloud Apollo. The Eagles incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors.
